OPEPE – Reclaimed Parquet

Opepe is an under-rated parquet originating from West and Central Africa. It has a lovely charactered grain that you would expect from a nice quality, hard wearing parquet. When freshly sanded it is quite orange in colour, yet becomes a warm, rich orange, brown-yellow over time. In addition it's a classic mid-century block and very much suits 1960s and 70s buildings. You can read further about this species here. Before buying your parquet we recommend that you request a sample so you know what to expect.

The Opepe is a standard sized block and the measurements are:

  • 9 ” long  2  3/4″ wide  x  3/4″ thick
  • (229 mm by 70 mm by 20 mm).

Please note: In the description we use Imperial dimensions because that is how the blocks were originally milled.

Metric dimensions are rarely an exact match.

Where from?

This was reclaimed from a school near Worksop (now demolished) and dates from the 1960s.

For sale in multiples of 1 sq m above the minimum purchase of 5 sq m – if you need a smaller quantity please contact the office directly.

Smaller amounts:

If you just want to do an infill area, we will try to match the size and species for you. However, there will be a small quantities handling surcharge of £25 including VAT for this service. That is over and above the price of the parquet per sq m plus delivery costs.

In order to use this service, we will ask for good photos in focus to be emailed with all three dimensions of the parquet block and your full contact details please. In addition, you may need to send us an original block that we are matching. Please be ready to do this as it helps a lot with identification.

The blocks are a tongue and groove block. All are in good, reclaimed condition although Opepe tends to split on the tongues, so expect some work there. There is a layer of sticky bitumen on the bases although this should not present a problem for you. The professional adhesives available these days will adhere to the bitumen and stick successfully without the necessity for removal. You can buy our recommended adhesive – Sikabond 5500s on our website.

The blocks will require some preparation prior to laying, particularly along the edges. This will give a tight fit and therefore a better finish. The floor will need several good sanding passes after the completion of the block laying.

Photos of Opepe:

The photos show our parquet blocks after sanding and polishing. This is not the condition of the blocks that are supplied, which will be in their reclaimed condition. The feature photo is of Opepe as supplied by us and laid by one of our recommended professional fitters. The size however may be different to the one advertised.
